Bevel gearing. I puzzled for quite a while as to how I could convincingly produce the bevel gearing for the training of the gun. The final solution was to mount the dividing head on the milling machine and just ‘kiss’ the outer face of the cogwheel with the finest centre drill I possess. I wish that I could have made the angle more acute, but mounting the indexing device on a small table limited my ability to do this. Always buy a milling machine with the largest table you can afford; milling machines have this annoying habit of not being able to position accessories where you most want them to be. I am aware that there are other configurations which are available to me, but I think long and hard before altering the position of the milling machine head out of the vertical. It took some courage to take the spray cans to remove all that triumphant metal work, and kill off most of the detail. Nevertheless, the sprayed finish does achieve the promised look of a real gun, rather than a model of a gun, and it is literally a case of biting the bullet in the cause of realism. At this period of history, warships were still highly polished, but it has to be remembered that any glinting object at sea gives away the position of a vessel and takes away any element of surprise as far as the enemy lookout is concerned.
